DraftKings will host its first-ever sports betting national championship event starting Friday in Jersey City.
The sports betting national championship will last until Sunday, during the NFL Divisional Playoff Weekend, and it will bring hundreds of sports bettors from different backgrounds to North Jersey.
This year’s event will be hosted by DraftKings’ very own Johnny Avello with an appearance by poker star Phil Hellmuth.
“This is brand new. This has never been done anywhere,” Avello, the director of Race and Bookmaking Operations at DraftKings, said in a statement. “Las Vegas does have the Super Contest, but that’s picking football every single week for the entire season. There’s other contests in Las Vegas like that, but there has never been a contest for this type of prize money for only three days. And on a mobile app where you get to bet your own bankroll and keep your winnings.”
The top prize will be $1 million, runner up will be awarded $350,000, and third place will win $250,000. There are more prizes for players who finish in the top 25 when the contest is all set and done.
On Friday and Saturday, you’re allowed to bet on any sport you want. However, Sunday betting is only allowed on the two NFL Divisional playoff games. Players must place a total of $1,000 in bets by the close of betting Saturday night and $2,000 across Sunday’s NFL games to be eligible to win leaderboard prizes.
Players with the highest bankrolls at the end of the tournament will share the leaderboard prizes. All players take home their final bankroll at the end of the tournament.
