Good news for residents of the Bayou — As of today, everyone in Louisiana is finally able to join the fun and start playing fantasy sports.
Yesterday, Nov. 6, voters approved a state law making it legal to play online fantasy sports for monetary prizes. Parishes of Jefferson, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. John the Baptist, and St. Tammany all influenced the vote heavily. Voters in 47 of Louisiana’s 64 parishes opted to legalize fantasy sports betting, with most of those against it situated in north Louisiana. which resides next to Mississippi, where sports betting is legalized.
Sports betting, another topic of interest to residents, is reportedly still several months away in Louisiana as state lawmakers and regulators still need to figure out the details on how it will be taxed and regulated. Among the talking points on the agenda — how to prohibit residents of a parish, where sports betting was approved, from participating in a parish where it’s allowed.
Mississippi and The District of Columbia are among some of the latest states to legalize sports betting, and Louisiana seems on its way to becoming the next.
